Is It All About You, Really?

Is It All About You, Really?

Four Agreements Cover SnipThe Four Agreements

1. Be impeccable with your word.

2. Don’t take anything personally.

3. Don’t make assumptions.

4. Always do your best.

Earlier this week, we began our journey into The Four Agreements as we talking about being impeccable with our word. This involved truth-telling and avoidance of gossip; we also touched on the way we talk to ourselves. (hint: be kind when speaking to yourself).

Next up: Don’t take anything personally.

Do you ever do this? I do.

That word, that tone, what they just said. I know what they meant.

And therein lies the habitual agreement. We take it personally because on some level we agree with what they said. It MUST be true. I am now officially offended.

Don Miguel calls this “personal importance“. That’s another name for …

EVERYTHING IS ALL. ABOUT. ME.

But really, it’s all about the other person.

Let’s do something different this time.

Here is a short video of Don Miguel Ruiz and Oprah discussing this agreement. I know he can explain better than I can.

Enjoy!

Did you hear that? We are responsible for what we say but we are not responsible for what other people think.

We cannot control people.

So the next time you start to take something personal, remember: it’s not about you, it’s about them. Speak your truth, and let go of whatever response you might receive.

Are you one who takes things personally?
